Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi has not sought asylum in South Africa, and South Africa would not facilitate his escape, it was declared Monday.

The country's Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane denied at a media briefing Monday in Johannesburg that South Africa had sent aircraft to Libya for Gaddafi's exit and said he was not aware of Gaddafi's current whereabouts.

"Should we start speculating if he is going to ask for asylum in South Africa? No, we will not speculate because we know, yes for sure, that he will not ask to come here," Nkoana-Mashabane told reporters, as cited by News 24.

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that South Africa has started negotiations with the Libyan ruler  to offer him a place of refuge as fighters have seized control of most of the capital Tripoli.
