Libya's rebel forces should show restraint for the sake of the country's post-Gaddafi stability, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said in a statement.
"NATO is ready to work with the Libyan people and with the Transitional National Council which holds a great responsibility. They must make sure that the transition is smooth and inclusive, that the country stays united, and that the future is founded on reconciliation and respect for human rights," he said, as cited by EUobserver.
In his statement, made late on Sunday, Rasmussen declared that "the Gaddafi regime is clearly crumbling"
EU leaders have also asked the rebels not to take revenge against Gaddafi loyalists as oppositional forces took over the most of Tripoli.
Gaddafi is reportedly still in the city, but has lost control over 80% of it. Two of his sons, Seif al-Islam and Mohammed, have been captured by rebels.
