Some 1,600 refugees from North Africa have landed over the weekend on the small Italian island of Lampedusa.

Among them are 100 women with 40 children including babies. The asylum seekers floated in on 10 boats.

More than 11,000 North Africans, predominantly from Tunisia and Lybia, have flooded Lampedusa since the start of the year due to turmoil in their home countries.
