The airports in the Bulgarian Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas fully observe aviation security measures as provided by European and national standards, according to an EC report.

A check of Sofia Airport completed in May 2011 yielded similar results.

Since Bulgaria's accession to the EU in 2007, the country's airport operators have been subjected to annual audits and inspections by the European Commission and the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) .

These inspections evaluate the quality of work of the industry and of the aviation administration, which in itself is under obligation to control and regulate the activities of airports, airline companies and ground handling operators.

The aviation administration constantly monitors the actual condition of the national regulatory database in the field of aviation safety.

Early in July, MEP Antoniya Parvanova issued several warnings that systematic thefts were taking place at Sofia Airport. According to Parvanova, the matter involved an organized crime group that had been operating at the airport for years and probably sold the stolen items through an established illegal channel.

However, the claims of the Bulgarian liberal MEP were rejected by Sofia Airport authorities and Bulgaria's Transport Minister, who said that the number of complaints involving unauthorized interference with luggage were within the EU norms.
