The embassy of Greece in Sofia has issued a statement about the 34-year-old Bulgarian citizen returned to his home country in a dire health condition, denying he was forcefully held and starved.
Kadir Mehmed was returned by Greek authorities to Bulgaria and transferred to the Blagoevgrad hospital, where doctors found he was in an especially undernourished condition.
Initial unofficial information has it the man had been discovered helpless near the Greek town of Drama, and had been sent to a Greek hospital. According to Kadir's muffled explanations, he had been kept in captivity along with three other Bulgarians after they went to Greece to look for work. All four managed to escape with Kadir being the last one.
According to the statement of the Greek embassy in Sofia, Mehmed has not been held forcefully by an individual in Greece and has not been put under conditions of forced labor.
"On July 6, 2011, Mehmed, under the influence of alcohol, was hit by a car near Kavala. He was admitted into the town hospital, albeit being uninsured and received adequate treatment there. Upon visits by Greek and Bulgarian policemen and social workers, he refused all contact," reads the statement of the Greek mission.
The announcement further states that authorities could not ascertain exactly when Mehmed entered Greece. He was transferred to Bulgaria by a medical vehicle upon the termination of his hospital stay.
The Greek embassy further states that the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki has been informed of the case right from the start.
