А 45-year-old Bulgarian businessman is in a critical condition in a Veliko Tarnovo hospital after his car was ambushed while on a business trip to Stara Zagora.

The attackers shot at the tyres of Atanas Atanasov's car while in motion, after which attempted to shoot the man himself, causing massive blood loss.

They disappeared immediately after, driving away in another car.

The incident happened in the Hainboaz pass nearby the village of Vaglevci, on the international road from Ruse to Svilengrad.

Police have immediately started a search for the perpetrators.

It is unclear what motivated them, but there are reports that Atanasov might have been travelling with significant amounts of money related to his business.

Atanasov, a Veliko Tarnovo resident, owns two companies for digital TV and internet.
