The traditional Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) meeting at Mount Buzludzha is being held Saturday, under the motto "After 120 Year – Contemporaries of the Future."

40 thousand Bulgarian socialists are expected to gather at the 18th meeting, held at Mount in the Stara Planina range, to mark the 120th anniversary of the Socialist Movement in Bulgaria and the Day of BSP, August 2nd. The celebrations will begin with an official ceremony for the laying of wreaths and flowers at the Monument of Freedom at Mount Shipka in honor of the battles during the Russian-Turkish Liberation War.

The meeting begins at 10 am. 120 young socialist will be presented with their first party membership cards and welcomed into the inner circle of BSP, while the 120th card will be bestowed in person by BSP party leader and former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev.

After that, the Chair of the BSP youth organization will present their campaign "Give a Star to the Future." The BSP nomination to run for President in the fall, the Member of the European Parliament and former Foreign Minister, Ivaylo Kalfin, and the Socialists' candidates for local mayors will be officially presented at 12 noon. Stanishev will close the meeting to be followed by a concert.

The entire BSP leadership and a number of MPs are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, it was announced late Friday that the light of the star topping the monument at Mount Buzludzha has been switched on despite the ban of the Stara Zagora Regional Governor to access the inside of the monument over unsafe conditions.

The light came on around 10:30 pm with organizers assuring every safety precaution has been undertaken. The ban stirred outrage in BSP and accusations the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party is attempting to foil the celebrations.

In 1891 on Mount Buzludzha the foundations of the Socialist Movement in Bulgaria were laid. The monument erected at the site and unveiled in 1981 on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian State is shaped in the form of a UFO.
