The sizzling weather that swept Bulgaria in July will reach its peak in August, turning it into the hottest month of this year's summer.

The mercury will zoom up to 34-39C in the southwestern parts of the country and the citizens of Sandanski, Petrich, Pazardzhik, Chirpan and Stara Zagora should brace for sweltering weather especially in the second and third part of the month.

Lows have been forecast at 10°-15°.

Tourists in Black Sea resorts will enjoy more than sunny weather and Mediterranean-like sea waves as highs will hit 35C along the southern coast.

Temperatures will come off the boil at the end of the month, when spells of cold northwestern air will cool down the country from the sweltering weather.

Medics urge people with heart problems to stay home during the hottest hours of the day. Drivers should be on their highest alert and take regularly short breaks with refreshments.

The highest summer temperature was recorded in Bulgaria in 1916 - 45,2C.
