A Minute of Silence - But Not for Norway's Democracy

Novinite Insider » EDITORIAL | Author: Nikola Petrov |July 25, 2011, Monday // 18:50

As a Bachelor in Scandinavian Studies, I am far from perceiving Norway as just one of those magical countries of fairytales and welfare.

Even one of the most egalitarian and mature democracies in the world does not equal a Utopia come true. I would not be that surprised if I hear that, let's say, a Muslim was attacked in Oslo by angry white teenagers.

But what happened Friday shocked me. Not particularly because it happened in Norway, it could have taken place in another Western democracy, too.

It is plainly shocking.

I believe it does not really matter what ideology "inspired" the 32-year-old Norwegian to commit such despicable and cowardly acts. Every now and then something goes wrong and the likes of Ted Kaczinski, Timothy McVeigh and Anders Behring Breivik are born.

The only piece of "good news" is that Norway's society is strong enough to survive. As Norwegian Prime Minister said, evil will be fought with even more democracy.

I am sure Norway can do it.
