Repair work at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has been put on hold because of an approaching strong typhoon.
The typhoon coming in from the Pacific has gusts reaching up to 50 meters per second near its center, ITAR-TASS reported.
The operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, which was badly damaged in the March 11 earthquake, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said on Sunday that it had stopped pumping radioactive water out of the station's nuclear reactors and the construction of a protective cap over them.
Experts still fear rainwater may leak into some of the damaged units, thus sending more radioactive water into the plant's basement.
Meanwhile, the Fukushima prefecture experienced a new earthquake on Sunday. The new quake had a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. No damages have been reported, and no tsunami alert has been declared as a result.
According to seismology experts, the increased seismic activity along Japan's east coast will continue for several more months.
