Former judge and MEP Dushana Zdavkova will run for president on her own, instead of being a vice-presidential candidate on the presidential ticket of Alexei Petrov, according to Tatyana Burudzhieva.

In an interview for Nova TV, Burudzhieva also pointed out a "disturbing fact" about the forthcoming elections, namely that journalist Yavor Dachkov, who is known for his ties to former secret agent Alexei Petrov (who is known for his ties to Dushana Zdravkova), is part of the election squad of former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva.

"I, personally, find the issue of the "candidates of the citizens" a little complicated. This means that the same set of people are drawing up the platforms of different candidates", she said.

Sociologist Tsvetozar Tomov, on the other hand, cautioned that the presidential elections threatened to degenerate into a turf war between Petrov, Borisov and Zdravkova.

"Both Petrov and Zdravkova have been dealt serious blows by Prime Minister Borisov. Maybe they want to get back at him", the expert commented.

In his opinion, their conflicts must be solved elsewhere, not during the elections for head of state.

"Bulgaria has stopped making politicians", Tomov remarked, adding that "Petrov and Zdravkova are not joining the presidential race to win but to organize a punishing vote against Borisov".

In his words, political scientists have described two-thirds of the candidates of ruling party GERB as "political anomalies", meaning that they have taken turns at almost all of the existing parties.

According to the sociologist, the two main candidates, the one of center-right party GERB and the one of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), are still missing, while the confirmed contestants are failing to stir up public opinion.

"The left-right axis in Bulgarian society has given way to the up-down axis, meaning you are either in or out of power", Tomov concluded.

Alexei Petrov, a former employee of the State Agency for National Security (DANS), has figured prominently in Bulgaria's public life since 2008 when he was revealed to be an undercover agent.

Under the Borisov Cabinet, Alexei Petrov was arrested on February 10, 2010, in a widely publicized special police operation codenamed "Octopus." He was charged with racketeering, money laundering, abetting prostitution, trading in influence and drug trafficking, spent 9 months in jail and was released on house arrest and later on own recognizance.

Dushana Zdravkova is a former Member of the European Parliament (in 2007-2009) from the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, and one of the party's founders.

In June 2011, she resigned as judge at the Varna District Court in protest against what she termed the manipulated election of a Sofia City Court Chair and against the "attempts to subordinate the constitutionally independent judicial system to the executive".
