Socialist Sofia Mayor Hopeful: Rightist Primaries Marred

Politics » DOMESTIC | June 14, 2011, Tuesday // 09:08

The mutual accusations of vote buying have marred the otherwise good practice of staging preliminary votes, commented Sofia Mayor candidate from the Bulgarian Socialist Party Georgi Kadiev.

Sunday Kadiev was one of the very few politicians outside of the rightist Blue Coalition to cast a vote in the primaries, given that his Socialists and the Blues have been arch-rivals in Bulgarian politics.

"I think this is a wonderful political practice that is still not very popular in Bulgaria and needs to be encouraged," said the socialist.

Tuesday in an interview for Nova TV commented that his action was "purely symbolic," but congratulated winner Proshko Proshkov, calling him a "promising candidate."

Kadiev nevertheless spoke about the accusations of vote buying between the two Blue Coalition members - Democrats for Strong Bulgaria and the Union of Democratic Forces.

"I think that unfortunately a lot of Blue Coalition Supporters were left with a bad taste after all that," said the socialist.
