The students of the Journalism and Mass Communications Department of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" have serious deficiencies in their competences, admitted its Dean Totka Monova.

Monova spoke during a conference entitled "Journalism Education in Southeast Europe" organized by the foundations Konrad Adenauer and Media Democracy, which took place in Sofia Friday.

The SU journalism department dead said that many of the future Bulgarian journalists had no idea who Winston Churchill was, or could not differentiate between World War I and World War II, which meant that it is extremely difficult to build up their knowledge at the university.

"We know that our students are not satisfied with their education. Our department is constantly criticized by the media who say that we don't send then competent candidates," Monova admitted further.

She did point out, however, that the professors of journalism are vastly underpaid leading many of them to try teaching at several schools at the same time.

She also said that because of administrative reasons her department was prevented from using available new equipment that would have helped the students.
