Bulgaria and Romania have fulfilled technical criteria and must be accepted to Schengen, stated in his speech MEP Carlo Coelho, the EP rapporteur on the Schengen accession of the two countries.

"The citizens of Bulgaria and Romania must be able to enjoy the same rights as the other citizens of the European Union," stated the MEP.

Reporting in plenary Tuesday, the Portugese EPP MEP stated that Bulgaria and Romania "have done a good job and must be congratulated."

Coelho argued that an imminent entry of the two member-states into the Schengen Area will boost the security of the EU.

He further stated that Schengen can be strengthened only by imposing the same rules for all member states rather than underprivileging some.

The EP plenary is expected to vote on Coelho's report on Wednesday.
