Bulgaria: Bulgarian Rightist Leader Spurns Ex-EU Commissioner's Presidential Bid Bulgarian rightist leader Ivan Kostov does not believe Kuneva's bid is non-partisan. Photo by BGNES

Meglena Kuneva, Bulgaria's former EU Commissioner and current Presidential runner, is actually the three-way coalition's candidate, according to rightist Blue Coalition's leader, Ivan Kostov.

Kuneva, who was introduced to Bulgaria's politics by the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity, a member of the three-way government (2005-2009), has repeatedly stated her candidacy would be completely non-partisan. But Kostov has his doubts:

"If you look at who is surrounding her, you will understand. A President like Parvanov and his political formation can do only one thing – to give birth of the three-way coalition," he said Monday, as cited by Darik radio.

The three-way coalition was headed by the rightists' archrival, the leftist Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). According to Kostov, the coalition was the brainchild of current Georgi Parvanov, former BSP leader, who is now heading his own non-political formation, the Alternative for Bulgarian Renaissance (ABV).

Both Parvanov and current BSP leader, former PM during the three-way government, Sergey Stanishev, recently voiced their approval of Kuneva's Presidential bid, even though they have not officially endorsed her. However, political analysts have deemed it possible that BSP may end up supporting her.

While the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity may end up supporting Kuneva, it is still unclear how the third member of the three-way coalition, the ethnic Turkish centrist Movement for Rights and Freedoms, will perceive her nomination

The Rightist Blue Coalition, which consists of the Union of Democratic Forces (SDS) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) parties, has to choose between two nominees - Rumen Hristov from SDS, a former Minister and vice-Minister of Agriculture, as well as advisor to Bulgaria's Presidents Zhelyu Zhelev and Petar Stoyanov, and DSB's MP Svetoslav Malinov. The outcome will be made clear after a preliminary election.
