Bulgaria: Sofia Railway Station Tops Airport as Concession Priority Bulgaria's Deputy Transport Minister Kamen Kichev has assigned priority to granting Sofia`s Central Railway Station under concession. Photo by BGNES.

The concession of Sofia's Central Railway Station is of higher priority than the Sofia Airport concession, Bulgaria's Deputy Transport Minister Kamen Kichev said Friday.

"The Sofia Airport will not be granted under concession at any cost", Kichev explained, adding that the due consultations with European creditors and a Kuwait-based investor in the construction of the airport were to be held first.

Kichev further insisted that all state-owned companies in Bulgaria had to be granted under concession.

He also argued that infrastructure charges collected by the National Railway Infrastructure Company had to be reduced.

The Deputy Transport Minister revealed that Bulgaria's state-owned railway company BDZ posted a loss of BGN 19 M for the first quarter of 2011, reducing the negative balance from BGN 29 M in the same period in 2010.

According to Kichev, the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications had received assurances from the World Bank that it had fulfilled all requirements for extending a badly needed loan of BGN 600 M to BDZ, and the transaction was only a matter of time.

In mid March, the railway workers came close to starting a general strike over some provisions of the World Bank loan deal, which were subsequently mitigated.

Kichev emphasized that all employees of BDZ had started receiving their payments on time.
He expressed hopes to stop robberies in trains and to make them cleaner.
