An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted northwestern Turkey shortly before midnight on Thursday, claiming one life.

The earthquake shook the northwestern province Kutahya, with an epicenter 80 km southwest of the city of Kutahya, at 11:15 pm on Thursday, according to the US Geophysical Institute.

Residents of Turkey's largest city Istanbul also felt the tremor. Several milder aftershocks have been reported.

One man died after he panicked and jumped from a building, according to local authorities. Several buildings are reported to have been damaged.
