Bulgaria's nationalist party has stirred up a heated debate after calling for the shut-down of the country's anti-discrimination watchdog over its inefficiency.

"The Bulgarian Commission for Protection against Discrimination is a parasitic structure. Its functions overlap with those of Bulgarian courts," Borislav Hristov, member of parliament from the Bulgarian far-right, nationalist Ataka party, told the morning broadcast of bTV channel.

"I do not see why this commission needs to function separately and feel exceptional", Stoyanov declared, adding that the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) used the anti-discrimination regulator for political purposes.

Stoyanov further insisted that the CPD incurs huge expenses and should therefore be closed.

"While this structure still exists, it should employ people that can really do their job properly", he stated, urging Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov to examine other "parasitic" structures like the ombudsman.

"Over 50% of the decisions of the Bulgarian Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) have been upheld, with only 10% of them returned for revision or partially upheld," CPD chairman Kemal Eyup fired back.

"We have created a working institution which serves Bulgarian citizens", Eyup added, citing statistics that the regulator had received a total of 838 tip-offs and complaints.

The watchdog chairman rejected allegations that the officials of the regulatory body were overpaid. He explained that the CPD was working on complaints against party leaders, including complaints involving the Ataka party.

According to Eyup, the majority of complaints filed with the CPD concern labor rights infringements, age discrimination, etc.
