As the Scottish National Party scored an impressive win in the UK local elections, a referendum on the country's possible independence to the Kingdom is expected to be initiated.

The party, led by Alex Salmond surpasses the 65-seat threshold required for a majority at the Scottish Parliament, initial results from the Thursday vote show.

"Just as the people have bestowed trust in us, we must trust the people as well, and that is why in this term of the Parliament, we shall bring forward a referendum and trust the people with Scotland's own constitutional future," Salmond said after the results were announced, as cited by the Montreal Gazette.

"If they want to hold a referendum, I will campaign to keep our United Kingdom together with every single fibre that I have," British Prime Minister David Cameron responded before the BBC.
