Global terrorist network Al Qaeda has confirmed the man US forces have hunted down is its leader Osama bin Laden.
Al Qaeda released a statement on jihadist forums confirming the death of its leader, Osama bin Laden, according to SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors militant messages, CNN reports while saying that the statement could not be immediately confirmed.
Al Qaeda leader, world's No. 1 terrorist, Osama bin Laden was killed by US SEALs in Pakistan on Sunday, and was promptly buried at sea.
In its statement Al Qaeda threatens to avenge Osama bin Laden's death.
"We stress that the blood of the holy warrior sheik, Osama bin Laden, God bless him, is precious to us and to all Muslims and will no go in vain... We will remain, God willing, a curse chasing the Americans and their agents, following them outside and inside their countries... Soon, God willing, their happiness will turn to sadness, their blood will be mingled with their tears," reads the Al Qaeda statement, which is signed by the group's "general leadership."
The statement is dated May 3, and is the first since Osama bin Laden was reported to have been shot down on Sunday, May 1.
Al Qaeda further urges the people of Pakistan where bin Laden was killed to rise in revolt.
It also says an audio message recorded a week before their leader was killed will be released shortly.
After Osama bin Laden's death, Ayman Al-Zawahri is the most prominent figure in Al Qaeda but it is still unclear how the terrorist network's leadership will be re-shaped.
