Italian authorities have announced that they have upped security measures, after Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi declared war when his youngest son was killed in a NATO bombing.

Saif al-Arab, Gaddafi's sixth son, as well as three of Gaddafi's grandchildren were massacred in a NATO hit that apparently targeted the Libyan leader himself Saturday overnight.

Gaddafi had been in the compound with his wife minutes before the strike, but had left at the time the three NATO missiles hit the building.

In ire, Sunday he declared the Libyan people has demanded an opening of war with Italy, which recently joined the NATO operation.

"Gaddafi's words are evidence that we must monitor events closely. We have already boosted security surveillance of our territory," stated Italian Minister of Internal Affairs Roberto Maroni.

Maroni was of the opinion that the Libyan leader's threats are "no mere propaganda."

At the same time, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Fratini was more dismissive, saying that there is "nothing realistic" in Gaddafi's words.

Meanwhile, a number of Western embassies in Tripoli, including the Italian one, have been vandalized by Gaddafi supporters.

Sunday also marked the first time Libyan missiles have fallen on foreign territory, as shells landed nearby border Tunisian town of Dehibat.

Missiles came from fighting around the Libyan border town of Wazin, where government forces are trying to repel rebels.
