The Kosovo government is refusing to discuss with Serbia the question about the potential partition of the Republic of Kosovo, according to the young country's Deputy PM Hayreddin Kuci.

Kuci has commented on a statement made Monday by the chief Serbian negotiator with Kosovo Borislav Stefanovic that Belgrade is ready to talk with Prishtina about the partition of the territory.

The northern-most corner of Kosovo is still populated with some 100-200 000 ethnic Serbs who have made clear their hopes to secede from the ethnic Albanian republic but such a scenario seems highly unlikely to be favored by the West.

According to Kosovo's Deputy PM Kuci, as cited by BGNES, the potential partition of Kosovo along ethnic lines will lead to a serious crisis in the entire region.

"Partition is not something that we will discuss. This is not a goal of the Kosovo side," he commented fearing a "lasting crisis that will be hard to manage" on the regional level.

Serbia and its former province Kosovo have started talks to hammer out some technical issues under massive EU pressure, which are the first official direct contacts between the two countries after Kosovo seceded in February 2008.
