Bulgarian EPP MEP Nadezhda Neynsky severely criticised her own Union of Democratic Forces for the manner of nomination of their candidate for the fall presidential elections in Bulgaria.
Tuesday the UDF National Council nominated party vice-chair Rumen Hristov with a secret vote. Hristov ran against Neynsky and received twice as many votes.
In her statement on the case, the rightist MEP criticises the process of nomination as non-transparent and predetermined.
"Apparently the decision to elect Hristov was taken well in advance. But this was an internal decision was not taken on the basis of consultation with UDF's own voters," said Neynsky.
She further stated that the Union risks discrediting itself by appointing unpopular candidates via what she saw as vexingly undemocratic procedures.
Neynsky, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, defended her position that she would have been the better candidate, but said she accepted the decision as irreversible.
She further warned the Union of Democratic Forces for its unclear position vis-a-vis the center-right government of PM Boyko Borisov, saying nobody knows whether the Union is supportive of the cabinet or is actually an earnest opposition.
The rightist MEP stated that given current development she sees an overall risk that the UDF could lose character and appeal for voters.
