Bulgaria's ruling center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party has only seven donors, showed reports of political parties for 2010 published by the National Audit Office (NAO).
Ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), currently in opposition, and the nationalist Ataka party, an informal ally of the ruling GERB, declared no donations, while leftist Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) reported the biggest number of donors.
In 2010, five out of GERB's seven donors gave a Christmas present to the party, transferring the money on December 28. The biggest sum, BGN 3 366.02, came from Hristo Todorov Dechev.
Two days earlier, the party received a non-monetary donation worth BGN 960. The first donor for 2010 channeled a total of BGN 1 800 into the party in April. GERB received only a total of BGN 11 159.61 in monetary donations for 2010. Senior GERB members, including Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, have indicated in the past that the main source of income for their party are the membership fees.
The largest opposition party, BSP, reported the biggest number of donors and the biggest amount of donations - BGN 378 498.60. Georgi Kadiev made the most significant contribution, pouring BGN 4 800 into the party's coffers. Kadiev is expected to be the Socialists' candidate for Sofia Mayor in the 2011 local elections in the fall. In 2009, he lost the partial local elections in Sofia to current mayor and GERB candidate Yordanka Fandakova.
The Audit Office report shows that some members of the party donated relatively small sums on a monthly basis. Ivaylo Ivanov Georgiev, for instance, transferred between BGN 44 and BGN 62 into the party's accounts each month.
Bulgaria's right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) received over BGN 187 000 in donations, while right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) recorded donations of slightly over BGN 7400. At present, the UDF and DSB, both descendants of the original UDF from the 1990s, form the rightist Blue Coalition.
Marginal conservative party "Order, Law and Justice" (RZS) accounted for 12 donors with a total contribution of BGN 31 600.
A total of 146 political parties submitted their 2010 reports on time. According to current regulations, 176 political entities in the country had to file their reports within the given time frame.
