Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is in a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh, a Red Sea resort, after suffering a heart attack, say state media.

Mubarak was taken ill while meeting prosecutors investigating the killing of hundreds of protesters and allegations of corruption, reports say.

Mubarak's condition is "almost stable", the manager of the hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh has said.

State TV quotes medical sources as saying that Mubarak, had refused to eat or drink since being summoned by the public prosecutor on Sunday.

Mubarak underwent gall bladder surgery in the German city of Heidelberg last year and reports about his poor health have persisted, although his aides had denied this.

In the middle of February an Israeli French-language magazine named JSS News, claimed that Mubarak, who has long been rumored to be suffering from cancer, was in the terminal phase of disease. According to the media he was at that time on his death bead in a hospital in Baden, Germany.

Egypt's prime minister, Obama administration official and a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel denied these rumors, saying the former Egyptian president has been in the seaside resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, where his private residence is located.

82-year-old Hosni Mubarak resigned as President of Egypt on February 11 under popular pressure and eighteen days of massive street protests.

Hosni Mubarak was the President of Egypt for almost 30 years - from October 1981 till February 2011. He was brought down by a "social network revolution" as the April 6th Youth Movement used Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to start protests against the regime, which grew to attract massive popular support.

Mubarak has been banned from leaving the country, along with his sons and their wives, and the family's assets have been frozen.

After he was overthrown, he fled to his holiday villa in Sharm el-Sheikh, a Red Sea resort, where correspondents say he has been keeping a low profile.
