Young Bulgarians Suffer from Depression, Psychosis, Alcohol Abuse

The mental health of young Bulgarians is facing increasing challanges that are staying underrecognized, according to a key Bulgarian psychiatrist.

Dr. Nina Tashkova from First Sofia Hospital, who spoke to the Bulgarian News Agency, explained that Bulgarians aged 25-40 are facing constant strains from a deteriorating economic situation and growing social alienation, which do not fail to affect negatively their psychic lives.

"The number of cases of clinical depression, panick attacks, anxiety disorders, and serious psychoses has been on the rise for the last few years," said Tashkova, adding that the group of people affected by these disorders is continually expanding its lower age barrier.

"The number of young people abusing alcohol is also rising, and with an especially strong rate among women," added the psychiatrist.

Dr. Tashkova also pointed out to what she saw as an inadequate attention given to psychiatric help in Bulgaria's healthcare and educational system.

"Not enough is being done in terms of prevention and information campaigns," lamented the physician.

Tashkova nevertheless opined that Bulgaria's youth are relatively open to talking about their mental health problems, an attitude that according to her is not always shared by their older compatriots.

Apart from a boost to psychiatric medial help, Tashkova stressed on the need for social and cultural measures, such as openness and dialogue with those in need.
