The center-right GERB government has had almost 2 years now to form a consistent position on the projected Belene NPP, but has failed to do that, according to ex-PM Sergey Stanishev.
Stanishev, who is the leader of the largest opposition party in Bulgaria - the Bulgarian Socialist Party - criticized the cabinet of successor PM Boyko Borisov for its apparently chaotic actions and positions over ongoing Belene negotiations this week.
Tuesday Minister of Energy and Economy Traicho Traikov fired National Electric Company Director Krasimir Parvanov for allegedly signing an unfavorable contract extension for Belene with Russian Atomstroyeksport.
Just hours after that the deal was defended by both PM Boyko Borisov and vice-PM and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov as favorable for Bulgaria. The public still does not know of the contents of the document.
"It is completely untrue that when the Belene project was started back in the day, it was started in the dark," commented socialist leader Stanishev Saturday.
He rejected claims on the part of the GERB cabinet that the initial contracts have made Belene NPP more expensive than it should be and voiced the opinion that the price of EUR 6.3 B that is being mentioned now is much higher than what his cabinet considered paying for the project.
