The number of Bulgarians with the so-called prestigious professions, such as lawyers, architects, and businessmen, is down according to data from the Bulgarian Social Security Institute (NOI).
Meanwhile, the same study shows that 90% of those individuals with high-powered jobs are self-insured, but their monthly deposits are at the minimum for their tax group threshold of BGN 420. These are the people NOI actually counts on to increase social security revenues.
The data was provided by NOI to the Bulgarian daily Dnevnik and reveals that over the economic crisis and the mass joining of the "gray economy,' the number of consultants, accountants, auditors, notaries public, business owners, their partners, and journalists is down by 25 000 or by 12% since the beginning of 2011.
The number of self-employed people is down by 30 000 in the last two years and only 3.4% of them pay their minimum insurance contributions of BGN 141 a month.
NOI experts say the trend is alarming, but hope the decreased revenues would be made up in the second half of the year.
