The United States and United Kingdom have followed France and attacked Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces in an action to enforce a UN-mandated no-fly zone.

Pentagon officials said that the US and the UK have fired more than 10 missiles, while France hit pro-Gaddafi forces which were attacking the rebel capital Benghazi, the BBC reported.

The leader has vowed to retaliate and to open arms depots to the people to defend Libya.

Cruise missiles hit air-defense sites in the capital Tripoli and Misrata. According to the Libyan state television, the attacks have left 48 people killed and 150 wounded.

France was the first to fire shots against Libyan government targets at 1645 GMT. The military spokesman said teh two French strikes destroyed a number of military vehicles.

UK PM David Cameron confirmed that British airplanes have also started action over Libya. He added that launching military action was "necessary, legal and right".

US President Barack Obama said that his country was taking "limited military action" as part of a "broad coalition".

He said that no US ground troops would take part in the attacks.

After the missile bombardment and air strikes, Gaddafi made a statement and called on people to resist.

"Civilian and military targets in the air and sea will be liable to serious danger in the Mediterranean," he said.

He called the attacks "a colonialist crusade of aggression. This can lead to open a new crusade war."
