The son of leader Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam, has responded to the UN Security Council decision to authorize air strikes on Libya, saying that his family was "not afraid".
"We are in our country with our people. We will not be afraid. Come on! We will not be afraid. I mean, you are not helping to the people if you are going to bomb Libya, to kill Libyans. You destroy our country. Nobody is happy with that," Saif al-Islam Gaddafi told ABC News.
He reiterated that the Libyan Army has been fighting only against rebels, not against civilians. In his words, the number of victims among Libya's civilian population was minimal.
Late Thursday, the UN Security Council approved a no-fly zone over Libya thus legitimizing a foreign military intervention in the fight between Gaddafi and pro-democracy rebels.
The decision made by the UN Security Council in a vote late Thursday Eastern Time provides for a no-fly zone over Libya plus "all necessary measures" to protect civilians against Muammar Gaddafi's forces.
A total of 10 of the 15 UN Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution proposed by the USA, UK, France, and Lebanon.
While not blocking it, Russian and China, the two other UNSC members with veto power, abstained together with Germany, India, and Brazil.
From among the Western powers, Britain and France have been especially pro-active in initiating discussions on the no-fly zone, while Germany, and earlier the United States, have been more unwilling to lend support to such an initiative. TheUSA has shifted in favor of a no-fly zone over the recent days.
