Japanese police report Thursday that 5 178 are confirmed dead and another 8 606 people are still missing.

About 380 000 have lost their homes and now live in temporary shelters, in the aftermath of the devastating 9 point magnitude on the Richter scale earthquake and following tsunami that struck Japan on March 11. Over 100 000 buildings have been destroyed.

850 000 households in northeastern Japan remain without power. Nearly half million have been evacuated from the worst affected areas.

Experts estimate the material damage at USD 187 B, and it is supposed to go up.

The Pentagon announced Wednesday that 14 American military ships and 17 000 servicemen are participating in a humanitarian action in Japan.
