A senior internal source has stated that the Arab League could take a formal decision Saturday to recognize the National Council in Benghazi as the legitimate ruling authority in Libya.

The National Council is the body that formed around rebels wanting the ousting of leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The source told Al-Jazeera that the Arab League, which is meeting Saturday in Cairo, is considering breaking ties with Gaddafi and recognizing the National Council as the "sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people."

Earlier Saturday it became clear that the Arab League is in support of the creation of a no-fly zone over Libya, a decision that it is expected to formally take today.
