A powerful explosion took place Saturday in the Japanese Fukushima NPP which is on fire after the disastrous 8.9 earthquake hit it Friday; the walls and ceiling of one reactor have collapsed.

White smoke has escaped the exploded reactor. It is not certain whether the blast was produced on purpose to cool off the reactor.

Authorities are now reported to fear a nuclear meltdown.

Earlier Saturday a chain reaction was reported to have started at the earthquake-hit Fukushima-1 NPP in Japan, but information as to its extent was scarce.

Radiation levels are reported to be rising, and to have reached many times the norm.

There is increased fear of aradioactive leaks, and Japanese PMNaoto Kan ordered the evacuation of all people living within 10 km of the NPP (about 45,000 persons).
