A 6.8-magnitude earthquake, which is a second major aftershock of Friday's devastating 8.9-magnitude quake, was felt along Japan's eastern coast on Saturday.

According to the US Geophysical Institute, the second big aftershock – the first one was 6.6-strong in the Japanese Sea – occurred on the territory of the northeastern prefecture Miyaki, 174 km southeast of the city of Sendai on the Honshu Island.

The aftershock was felt on the entire eastern coast of Japan which was hit by a tsunami on Friday resulting from the major earthquake.

Several hundred are reported to have perished in the earthquake on Friday.
