France has become the first country to officially recognize the Libyan opposition transitional National Council, as the country's legitimate government.

The announcement was made after a meeting of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and two representatives of the council, the BBC informed on Thursday, and it came a day after the European Parliament urged the EU to recognize the rebels.

Sarkozy became the first head of state to meet with representatives of the opposition from the eastern city of Benghazi, which was taken over by rebels in a deadly uprising against leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The president also said that France would send an ambassador to Benghazi and receive a Libyan envoy in Paris.

Meanwhile, NATO defense ministers are meeting Thursday to discuss military options related to Libya, including a proposed no-fly zone.
