Monday marks the end of Bulgaria' first census in a decade, which kicked off on February 1 2011.
Census takers will continue to visit people's homes until 8 pm on Monday. Special stations have been opened in the largest cities (regional centers) for those who for some reason have not filled the questionnaire yet.
After over three million people took part in the first ever online census in the country, which was carried out February 1-9, the classic census started on February 10. People who have filled in the online census questionnaire have received a unique 10-digit code, which has to be provided to the census takers, when they visit their home.
As of February 22, a total of 6 712 251 people had taken part in either the online or traditional census, which constitutes 90% of the registered population the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute has informed. Of them, 1 183 000 live in the capital Sofia, 652 000 in the Plovdiv Region, 445 000 in the Varna Region, 377 000 in the Burgas Region and 303 000 in the Stara Zagora Region.
The decennial census aims to collect full, exact, and adequate information about the condition of the population, economy, and society which are to be used to draft strategic documents for the development of the country – a National Program for Development "Bulgaria 2020" and a new 5-year plan for the absorption of EU funds – 2013-2017.
