Thousands have already been killed in Libya where dictator Muammar Gaddafi is trying to beat down a popular uprising, according to Libya's deputy UN Ambassador.

Ibrahim Dabbashi, who denounced the Gaddafi regime earlier this week, announced Friday, as cited by international media, that thousands are already dead, and that more deaths are expected.

His comments came ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on the Libya crisis. Dabbashi urged the U.N. Security Council to act immediately by imposing sanctions on Gaddafi and other Libyan leaders.

He also said that on Friday Libya will stop exporting oil for security reasons but that the oil industry will not be affected.
