The Bahraini army withdrew Saturday around noon from Manama's Pearl Square, the site of large-scale antigovernmental protests.

Police have started to attempt dispersing protesters, using teargas and arresting many.

The army was deployed after protesters-police clashes resulted in a number of deaths during the previous days.

After withdrawing from the square, army tanks have nevertheless been positioned in nearby neighborhoods.

In the meanwhile, the main Shiite Al-Wafa party refused to enter into talks with the government, asking it to step down.

Protesters are now reported to request the dethronation of the ruling Al Khalifa royal house. The royal family in the predominantly Shiite country is Sunni.
