The Hungarian Government has accepted to propose amendments to the country's much discussed media law, EU officials stated on Wednesday.

The Hungarian Parliament will discuss the amendments in two weeks time.

The law, which seeks to introduce "balance" into reporting, and which includes heavy financial penalties for non-compliance, has faced a constant stream of criticism since it was introduced at the beginning of 2011, with the domestic press declaring its existence to be the end of a free press in the country. One leading newspaper even printed a blank front page to make its point.

" The Hungarian authorities have agreed to amend the media law. We are satisfied that the amendments will answer to all our concerns," declared Jonathan Todd, spokesperson for Neelie Kroes, European Union Commissioner for Digital Agenda.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the Hungarian authorities to ensure the agreed changes are now incorporated into Hungarian law and that the revised law is consistently applied in practice," Neelie Kroes herself said, as cited by the Wall Street Journal.
