New data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) sheds light on the housing landscape in Bulgaria, painting a picture of the majority of Bulgarians residing in older homes.
The production in the construction sector in Bulgaria registered a drop by 13% in December 2010, compared to the previous month, according to preliminary data by the National Statistics Institute (NSI).
In December 2010, the working day adjusted data for the construction production showed a decrease by 12.4%, compared to the same month of 2009.
On a monthly basis, the construction production in December registered a decrease – building construction dropped by 12.3% and civil engineering dropped by 2.1%, calculated from seasonally adjusted data.
On an annual basis, there was a drop by 19% in building construction and an increase of 0.1% in civil engineering, calculated from working day adjusted data.
In December 2010, the industry in Bulgaria also registered a drop by 1%, compared to the previous month.
According to working day adjusted data, the industrial production index increased by 5.2%, compared to the same period of 2009.
On a monthly basis, mining and quarrying industry decreased by 7.1%, manufacturing also registered a drop by 4.3%. However, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply increased by 3.2% in December, compared to November 2010.
On annual basis, the industrial production index, calculated from working day adjusted data, increased by 7.9% in manufacturing, by 0.8% in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, and by 0.3% in mining and quarrying industry.
Increases were registered in the production of investment goods by 16.9%, in the production of intermediate goods by 6.9%, and in the production of energy by 2%.
According to the preliminary NSI data, in Dece,ber 2010 the turnover in Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles is 0.1%, compared to the previous month.
The turnover fell by 3.1% in comparison to the same month of 2009, according to working day adjusted data.
On a monthly basis, the turnover increased in five activities – in retail sale of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (by 1.8%), in retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (by 1.1%), in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (by 1.1%), in retail sale of computers, peripheral units and software, and telecommunications equipment (by 1%) and in retail sale of audio and video equipment, hardware, paints and glass, and electronic household appliances (by 0.5%).
The turnover in retail sale of automotive fuel decreased by 0.2%.
On an annual basis, the turnover in December 2010 increased by 2.7% only in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco. In all other activities, the decreased ranged from 1.7% in retail sale of computers, peripheral units and software to 6.3% in retail sale of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods.
