Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev has published a lengthy article arguing against what he sees as a systematic abuse of institutions presently going on in Bulgaria.

"In the last few years we can manifestly witness a desire to criminalize Bulgarian public life," states Velchev's piece which came out in Wednesday's edition of wide-circulation daily Trud.

In the material the Chief Prosecutor laments in particular the government's and political parties' stance towards the institution of the state prosecution, arguing that politicians constantly attempt to disburden themselves from responsibility by claiming that the prosecution is flawed and ineffective.

"In Bulgaria charges for crime are being made with an amazing ease. Some think it is sufficient to file a signal against their opponents to solve their issues," writes the Chief Prosecutor.

Velchev also points to the fact that in Bulgaria politicians rashly formulate accusations of crimes against each other and systematically file charges with the prosecution which are vaguely and inadequately substantiated, thus abusing the judiciary.

What is more, according to Velchev politicians are using the prosecution as a political tool, something which he vows it will never become.

"It is a general expectation that problems be solved solely by the prosecution, but then the prosecution is assessed positively only if it prosecutes one's political oponent," remarks Velchev.

He promises that the State Prosecution will never initiate highly-publicized sensational statements for the media and castigates the government and other political actors for engaging in just the same.

"As a matter of fact what is going on is not about justice or equity - it is plain abuse of state institutions," rounds up the Bulgarian Chief Prosecutor.
