More than one million people are estimated to have gathered Tuesday in downtown Cairo in what has become the largest protest rally yet against the regime of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.
According to Al Jazeera TV, the number of the protesters in downtown Cairo was close to 2 million people.
Tuesday's million-strong protest, also described as the march of one million, marked the 8th day of protests against Mubarak.
The record-large crown on Tahrir square prayed together, and chanted "Leave, Leave" against Mubarak, CNN reported.
Many of the protesters had spent the night on Tahrir square in defiance of the curfew imposed by the authorities. The million-strong rally demanding unyieldingly Mubarak's resignation was guarded by military forces with tanks.
For the first time on Tuesday, Cairo saw small groups of people demonstrating in support of 82-year-old President Hosni Mubarak, the Bulgarian National TV reported.
Late Monday night Mubarak assigned the newly appointed Vice President Omar Suleiman to start talks with all political forces for reforms in the country's constitution and legislation. The opposition has moved to set up a "National Coalition for Reforms."
