Bulgaria's Road to Eurozone Stalled: Political Crisis Inflicts Billion-Lev Blow
As Bulgaria grapples with a deepening political crisis and the looming specter of early elections, the economic ramifications are starkly evident
There is no grain crisis in Bulgaria, Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov announced Thursday.
His statement was a response to the Bulgarian Socialist Party, which has stated that there is a grain crisis in Bulgaria and the country imports wheat.
Naydenov has explained that the only import in Bulgaria comes from Pakistan and it consists of about 3,000 tons high quality wheat, which is “negligible quantity” compared to Bulgaria’s export.
However, the Branch Chamber of Industrial Bread Producers and Confectioner in Bulgaria announced recently that they expect the price of the most popular bread to increase by BGN 0.20-0.30 per kilogram, when the current price is BGN 1.10.
“Bulgaria produces less than 1% of the total world production of grain. There is no way our country could define the prices of wheat because it is not a world factor. Bulgaria has exported 1,5 million tons of wheat and at present, the country has just as much, which is enough to ensure the grain balance in the country,” Naydenov said.
In his words, intervention of the market, which aims stabilizing the prices, is envisioned only if the price of wheat falls below EUR 101 per ton, and not when it is high.
“Bulgaria has grain. Bulgaria has never been left without grain. In my opinion, the statement by the opposition is just a political exercise,” Naydenov said.
He added that the Competition Protection Commission has already been approached over the announcement of bread prices by the Branch Chamber of Industrial Bread Producers and Confectioner in Bulgaria.
