Bulgaria's Food Safety Agency will start operating on February 1 2011, the Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov has announced
This means a one month delay, as the agency was originally scheduled to begin operating on January 1, 2011. As Naydenov explained on Tuesday, the Bulgarian MPs have been too busy passing the Election Code amendments, which has led to a delay in the new legislation on foods, necessary in order for the agency to be launched.
"The new law will be ready literally within days," the Agriculture Minister declared.
The Food Safety Agency will have 28 regional centers around the country. It will include the currently existing National Veterinary Service, National Plant Protection Service, National Grain and Grain Products Service, and this part of the public health body RIOKOZ that is responsible for the food safety.
The members of the new agency, together with the regional structures, are expected to be 400 less than the members of the four services that existed until, due to the reduction of the repeating units.
