The Bulgarian Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, has announced that the topic of his potential presidential bid was outdated for discussion.
“I want to say one thing – there is no political decision on a future candidate for president by the ruling party GERB. At the moment I am only vice-president and interior minister,” Tsvetanov said in an interview for the Bulgarian News Agency.
He added that he performed my duties, stood behind the professional activities of all policemen and firmly believed that when someone breaks the law, the state should play its part.
On a question whether he was looking towards the Presidency, Tsvetanov said that he was looking only towards performing his professional duties at the Interior Ministry.
He pointed out that one of the most important priorities for Bulgaria in 2011 was the technical readiness for performing the criteria for entering the Schengen Area and guaranteeing the safety of the EU borders.
“We talked to PM Boyko Borisov and he talked to his colleagues to assure that there will be no connection between the Schengen criteria and the other policies, especially the evaluation mechanism,” Tsvetanov said.
The Bulgarian interior minister also noted that the special tribunal, which is envisioned to try mafia bosses and high-level corruption, will probably begin functioning by mid-2011.
However, Tsvetanov did not announce the exact cost for the creation of such a tribunal.
“When you see the outcome of a quick and fair trial, especially for victims of crimes, the effect will be much more than the money that will be spent on its creation,” the minister said.
