Unconfirmed rumors in Bulgaria, which have been disproved almost immediately, say that Manchester United's star striker is applying for UK citizenship.
The rumors appeared in the past couple of days in Bulgarian football circles and has been circulated in online sports sites and forums.
According to the Bulgarian tabloid Blitz, Berbatov wanted to get a British passport in order to remain with Manchester United after the end of his career.
Several Bulgarian sports news websites, however, have cited persons close to Berbatov as refuting the rumors.
They have confirmed that Berbatov really wanted to remain with Manchester United until the end of his football career but had no intention to seek UK citizenship.
The star striker is even said to have had a good laugh when he heard "the news" about his application for a British passport.
Since the start of the 2010-2011, Berbatov has had an outstanding performance for United, and is currently the top scorer in the English Premier League.
His most recent goal was on Tuesday in United's 1:1 draw against Birmingham.
