Bulgaria will be completely ready to enter the Schengen Area in March 2011 as expected, stated Bulgarian Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov Tuesday.
"We will have completely fulfilled all technical requirements, which I hope would be fully appreciated by our European partners," said Tsvetanov.
He recalled that in the first months of 2011 important visits are due, for instance from EU internal affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, as well as a delegation from the German Bundestag.
Recently France and Germany said they would block Bulgaria and Romania's March 2011 Schengen entry over concerns about corruption and organized crime in those countries. Many have seen this move as illegitimate, as Schengen Area entry has clear technical requirements that have nothing to do with the two countries' concerns.
Tuesday Minister Tsvetanov said that the decision about when Bulgaria will accede to Schengen "will be political."
"I hope that this political decision will nevertheless correspond to the technical readiness of our country and won't be bound to other matters," added the Bulgarian Minister of Interior.
