Bulgaria’s tennis star Magdalena Maleeva is ready to return to the national tennis team for the Fed Cup tournament in 2011.
The former number 4 in the world has told Dora Rangelova, the captain of the team, that she was ready to participate in the first round in the Europe/Africa Zone Group of the Fed Cup, which would take place February 1-5 in the Israel’s city of Eilat.
The official Bulgarian team has to be defined and confirmed to the international federation next week. The enlarged list of the team consists of Tsvetana Pironkova, Dia Evtimova, Elitsa Kostova, Viktoria Tomova and Magdalena Maleeva.
“I am very happy that Magi Maleeva wanted to participate in the team. She is a big name in tennis. Her experience and routine will in all cases contribute to our good performance. The fact that she will participate would be an additional motivation to the other tennis players,” Rangelova said.
Maleeva ended her professional competitive career in 2005. However, in September 2010 she participated in the national championship and won. Her victory started rumors about her eventual comeback.
The top Bulgarian tennis player took part in 41 matches with the Bulgarian national team at the Fed Cup tournament – 26 single and 15 couples. Her last participation was in 2005, when she was the team’s captain.
Bulgaria has been participating in the Fed Cup for 14 years. Its team showed the greatest victories at the semifinals of the World Group in 1985 and in 1987.
