Bulgaria's Sofia International Airport has introduced several measures to alleviate the situation of travelers who are stranded at the airport as a result of delayed or canceled flights because of inclement weather.

The measures have been taken after dozens of outbound and inbound flights have been canceled, delayed or diverted to other airports in the past couple of days as a result of the thick fog over the Bulgarian capital and the snow and freezing cold in Western Europe.

The Sofia Airport is not usually a major hub for transfer flights, and as a result the time that passengers spend there is short. The recently increased waiting time for travelers, however, has necessitated the introduction of additional services aimed at helping the passengers feel more comfortable.

Thus, the airport has installed 50 additional seats in the lounges and is considering adding more.

Every single hour the airport information system will provide updated information about meteorological conditions and the state of the runways in Sofia and other airports in Europe affected by inclement weather.

Both terminals of the Sofia Airport feature medical units, with medical staff that is constantly on duty. The airport has installed special telephones in all sections allowing passengers to request medical help at any moment.

Over the past two days, the airport medical units provided help to 60 passengers, while the monthly average figure usually does not exceed 100 patients.

The airport has started building special corners for children and child care.
