As much as USD 50 B will be spent on the FIFA World Cup 2018, the Russian "Vedomosti" daily has announced.

By 2018, Russia has to build a total of 7711 km of new roads and 2023 km of railways worth USD 35 B. Some USD 3.8 B will be spent on new stadiums.

On Thursday, FIFA announced in Zurich that Russia has been chosen to host the football World Cup 2018. Russia succeeded in comfortably beating England and joint bids from Spain-Portugal and Belgium-Netherlands.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin immediately hopped on a plane to Zurich, having earlier opted not to join the last-minute lobbying efforts.

Russia, already spending massively on the Sochi Winter Olympics it will host in 2014, now faces the additional challenge of readying airports, modern stadiums, trains and other public works it will need to host 32 football teams and millions of visitors.

On the same occasion, Qatar was chosen to host the World Cup in 2022. Qatari officials have also said they will spend billion on transportation and other infrastructure.
